We’ve spent a good deal of time recently wondering what’s going down in Europe and what the end result of the conflict in Syria will be. While we’ve all been doing that, did you know Iran has been harassing and buzzing U.S navy vessels in the Persian Gulf?
There have been several incidents in the last couple of months.
An accident was barely avoided when SEVEN Iranian patrol boats ‘buzzed’ a U.S Navy Coastal Patrol Boat USS Firebolt as she sailed in international waters in the Persian Gulf. Some believe that Iran is on a quest for global power. Are they trying to agitate a situation to justify their use of escalating tactics?
This is the latest in a series of incidents involving Iranian assault boats approaching U.S navy vessels. The crew of the Fireboat repeatedly attempted to communicate with the Iranians but no response was received. Crew-manned weapons were readied for use, but no shots were fired during the incident.
“The Iranian’s unsafe maneuvers near a United States ship operating in accordance with international law while transiting in international waters created a dangerous, harassing situation that could have led to further escalation including additional defensive measures by Firebolt,” the official told USNI News. “This type of incident would have led NAVCENT to recommend that the State Department deliver a diplomatic message of protest if this interaction had been with a country with which the United States had an official diplomatic relationship.”
NAVCENT (United States Navy Central Command) said that this type of altercation is dangerous and increases the chance of maritime collisions. One of the Iranian vessels stopped directly in front of the Fireboat and the crew had to take evasive maneuvers to avoid hitting the smaller craft, the two vessels came within 100 yards of a collision, a defense official is quoted as saying.
Sky News reports:
US officials have expressed concern about the incident as it is at least the fourth such event in less than a month.
Late last month, a US Navy patrol vessel fired warning shots at an Iranian fast-attack boat that approached two US ships.
Iran’s defence minister responded by claiming that Iranian vessels were just doing their job.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps fast-attack boats approached the USS Firebolt on Sunday with their machine guns uncovered, though not trained on the Americans, according to Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis.
“Commanding officers of ships are given the inherent right of self-defense, and what we don’t want to have is a situation where, due to miscalculation, that right is invoked when it doesn’t need to be,” Davis said. (source)
If you aren’t wondering what the heck is going on, you aren’t paying attention.
- Unrest in Europe with some countries calling for the formation of a European army
- Germany and the Czech Republic telling citizens to stockpile food and water
- India and Pakistan are having live fire spats across the Kashmir border
- The Middle East is going up in flames
- North Korea is aiming missiles at the Japanese coast
- Russia is setting up a base just 50 miles from the U.S border in Alaska
And now, to top it all off, Iran is once again getting provocative.
Looking at the rising tensions around the world it’s clear that we are living in very unstable times. I hope you’re prepared because things may be coming to a head very soon.
